VIN Decoder
Paste a VIN. This page asks NHTSA for factory make, model, year and engine, then explains the 17 positions. It does not look up crashes, owners, mileage or a title.
Paste a VIN and press Decode.

Seventeen characters, then a wall of ads
You get a VIN from a listing, a door jamb, or a parts invoice. You want the factory reading: make, model, year, engine. Search for vin decoder free and the first pages ask for an email, a photo of the car they already have, or a scroll past accident upsells before they show the same NHTSA fields this page shows.
The United States standardized the 17-character VIN in 1981, under 49 CFR 565. The letters I, O and Q are left out so they are not read as 1 or 0. This page will not rewrite those letters for you.
What NHTSA actually returns
DecodeVinValues is the flat government feed. For the published sample 5UXWX7C5*BA and year 2011 it comes back with BMW, X3, six cylinders, 3.0 liters, and error code 6 because the VIN is incomplete. A 200 from that feed is not a complete car. Empty fields stay empty. This page writes "not given by the source" instead of inventing a trim or a gearbox.
Plant country is where the vehicle was assembled. That is not the same as the brand's home country. A BMW built in the United States still says United States in that field. I will not swap in Germany to make the card look tidy.
The strip is a map, not a spec sheet
Positions 1 to 3 are the world manufacturer identifier. Positions 4 to 8 are the manufacturer's own descriptor. Position 9 is the North American check digit from 49 CFR 565.15. Position 10 is the year code. Position 11 is the plant. Positions 12 to 17 are the sequence.
Click a character and you get that group. You do not get a claim that position 5 always means airbags. Those inner codes belong to the manufacturer. If I do not have their table, I will not pretend.
What leaves this tab
Decode posts the VIN to Softery, then Softery asks NHTSA. A useful answer can sit in memory on that process for a few days so a repeat of the same VIN does not hit the government twice. The cache dies when the process restarts. It is not a public list and it is not written to Supabase.
Copy spec and the image hide the VIN until you turn that off. Local history is off until you tick the box, and Clear history wipes it. Mixpanel gets outcome, mode, and a cache hit or miss. It does not get the VIN, a hash of the VIN, or the NHTSA URL.
What this page will not do
It will not sell you a crash report. It will not guess a stock photo of that exact car. It will not take a URL you typed and proxy it. If NHTSA is slow or asks for a pause, you get that message and a retry, not a fake "VIN not found".
If you have a tracking number instead of a VIN, use Tracking Number Lookup. The rest of the catalog is on free tools. There is no car payment calculator here yet, so I will not point you at a 404. The longer write-up is The VIN Came With a Crash Upsell.
Common questions
Does this show crashes, owners or a title?
No. NHTSA vPIC returns factory fields: make, model, year, engine, body, fuel, plant country. It is not a history report. If a site promises accidents and liens from this same free feed, it is padding.
Where does the VIN go?
On Decode, this tab posts the VIN to Softery. Softery asks NHTSA and sends back the normalized fields. The VIN is not written into a Softery database and it is not put in the address bar. Mixpanel sees the outcome and the mode, not the digits.
What if my VIN is shorter than 17 characters?
Use I have an incomplete VIN. NHTSA accepts a partial VIN and a * for a missing character. The official sample is 5UXWX7C5*BA for 2011. A number from before 1981 may not follow the 17-character scheme, and this page will not promise a historic decode.
Why ask for a model year?
Position 10 is a 30-year cycle. B is 1981 and 2011. NHTSA recommends sending the year. This page will not pick the current cycle for you. Leave the year blank if you do not know it.
