The answer is one division
An inflation calculator does one thing. It reads the price index for the month you started in, reads it again for the month you asked about, and multiplies your amount by one over the other. That's it. This page prints the division so you can check it against the BLS table instead of trusting a box.
The index is CPI-U, all items, US city average, not seasonally adjusted. Series CUUR0000SA0, base 1982-84 = 100, which is why numbers from the eighties sit near a hundred. The government's own calculator says it uses "the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) U.S. city average series for all items, not seasonally adjusted", so the two pages are reading the same column.
The chart changes when you change a date
The BLS calculator gives you a number and stops there. I went looking for a chart on it and there isn't one. calculator.net does draw one, but it's the same picture every time, the yearly inflation rate from 1913 on, and it has nothing to do with what you typed.
The chart here plots your amount, month by month, across the span you picked. Move a date and the line moves. That is the part a single number hides: a salary that flattened out, or the two years after 2021 that everybody remembers. Point at a month, or focus the chart and walk it with the arrow keys, and it names the month and what the amount was worth then.
A month with no number
October 2025 has no CPI. The lapse in appropriations stopped the collection that month and BLS never went back to fill it in. Its own calculator puts a banner on the page and refuses to answer for that month.
So does this one, by name, instead of quietly splitting the difference between September and November. The line on the chart breaks there rather than running straight through, because a hole in the data is worth seeing.
Data through a month you can read
The series is inside the page, so once the page has loaded you can unplug the cable and still get an answer. That also means the numbers are a snapshot. The month they run through is printed under the chart and in every file you download.
When BLS publishes a new month, I rebuild the snapshot from the same public file and the stamp moves. If the stamp is old, the tool is old, and you can see that without digging for it.
What this doesn't tell you
CPI is an average over a basket, for all urban consumers. Your rent and your groceries did their own thing. A number from this page is a fair way to compare two dollar amounts across time and a poor way to argue about your own budget.
It also says nothing about what money would have earned. A hundred dollars left in a drawer in January 2000 needs about twice that today to buy the same things. Common questions
Where do the numbers come from?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics, series CUUR0000SA0, the CPI-U for all items in the US city average, not seasonally adjusted. BLS says everything it publishes is in the public domain and asks to be cited, which is why its name sits under the chart. The file is inside this page, and the month it runs through is printed on the page and in the CSV.
Does anything I type leave my browser?
No. The whole series is already in the page, so the math runs in this tab. Mixpanel and Google Analytics load with Softery.io. They see that someone opened the tool, which example was clicked and a rough band for the size of the amount. They never get the number itself.
Why does one month refuse to answer?
October 2025 was never published, so there is nothing to look up. BLS could not collect that month because of the lapse in appropriations, and it did not go back and fill the hole in later.
What is the difference between a month and the annual average?
BLS publishes twelve monthly numbers and one average for the year. Picking 1958 with no month means that year's average. Picking June 1958 means that month. For the rate per year I count an annual average as the middle of its year, so the 2016 average to July 2026 is 121 months rather than ten flat years.
