I Could Not Put One Dash Back

I Could Not Put One Dash Back

I pasted a draft into a free cleaner and pressed the only button on the page. The em dashes were gone. So was the en dash in 2019 to 2021. So were two curly quotes I had typed on purpose. The result was one blob. There was no list of what moved.

I wanted the long dashes out. I wanted the year range left alone. The page would not let me put one mark back.

The em dash remover on Softery is the other shape. A checkbox per class. A row per hit. Undo on any single change. The draft stays in this tab.

One Button Hid the Hit I Wanted

ConvertCase has an em dash page. You paste and click. You get a blob. That is the whole product. It is fine until the pass is wrong, which is often, because an em dash in the middle of a sentence and an en dash in a year range are not the same mark.

I don't want a cleaner that is proud of how much it deleted. I want to see the hit. If utilize became use, show me the row. If I meant utilize because I was quoting a spec, I put that row back.

A lot of the Chrome add-ons do the same one-pass trick, only they need an install and they only work inside that browser. The Reddit threads that asked for this tool asked for a page you can paste into. Not an extension. Not a script you have to trust on a folder of files.

Rank 12 of 1,754

I ranked this idea twelfth out of 1,754, score 9.30, about five hours of work. The card said ship a checkbox row per artifact class, a side-by-side view, a count badge per class, and click-to-undo on any single replacement. Also handle a paste from Word and Google Docs, where the curly quotes arrive inside HTML.

The text pile on that list is long. A case converter. A lorem generator whose only job is to put the text on screen in the first three seconds. This one sat at twelve because the ask is current and mean. People are deleting a character they used to like, on purpose, because a reader now treats that character as a machine tell.

I'm not going to tell you the other cleaners are useless. They're fine if you want a blob and you trust the pass. A lot of people want the list.

225 Points for Deleting a Character

A thread on r/ChatGPT is titled like this:

Has anyone figured a batch/script/tool to auto remove — "em dashes" & "Un-ChatGPT" formatting?

That is the product spec, written as a question. Another thread on the same sub sat at 225 points with 79 comments. The subject of that one was a person who used to put the long dash in on purpose, as a bit of style, and now strips it even when the strip introduces a typo.

I didn't invent that panic. I built the page for it. People are asking because a teacher or a client will treat one mark as a machine tell. They are not asking the page to make an essay sound smarter.

If you came here to hide that you used a model, this page will not do that for you. It will take the obvious marks off. A reader who is paying attention will still notice a forced list of three ideas, or a paragraph where every sentence is the same length. Those need a person.

The Year Range Is Not the Tell

An em dash is the long one. An en dash is the medium one. A hyphen with spaces around it is the cheap version of both. -- with spaces is the version you get when the keyboard will not give you the long mark.

Those four are not one rule.

MarkWhat I doWhat I leave
Em dash, or -- as a pauseComma, or a period if the next word is capitalized--force and other flags
En dash as a pauseSame as the em dash2010–2016, a numeric range
Hyphen with spaces between wordsComma10 - 12, a page range
Hyphen inside a wordNothingwell-known

The one-button pages flatten that table. That is how a year range dies next to a pause. This page gives each class a box. Turn en dashes off and 2019 to 2021 stays in whatever form you pasted.

Word Hides the Marks in HTML

Paste from Word or Google Docs and the curly quotes often arrive as HTML entities, not as the characters you see in the box. A plain textarea reads the fallback plain text and misses “. Or it keeps a non-breaking space you cannot see and cannot delete with the space bar.

This page reads the HTML on the clipboard first. It flattens the tags, turns the entities into the real marks, then runs the same rules. The smart quote box lights up because the mark is actually there.

If you paste plain text, the plain text is what you get. There is no extra trip. The HTML path only runs when the clipboard has HTML.

I did not add a file upload. A .docx drop is a different tool on the same list. This page is the paste. If you have a folder of files, you still open them one at a time and paste. That is slower than a script, and it is also the version you can watch.

The Skills Are a List, Not a Model

I already run two editing checklists on my own posts. One catches generic machine tells. The other is the house voice: no long dash, no curly quotes, short words where a fancy one snuck in.

Those checklists are what people mean when they say "clean this." They are not a model. They are a table. utilize becomes use. in order to becomes to. I hope this helps gets dropped. A sentence that needs a real rewrite still needs me.

I put those tables on this page as code. There is no API call after the page loads. You can unplug the cable and still strip a dash. If a swap is wrong, undo that row. If a whole class is wrong for this draft, clear the box.

Technical words stay. React stays React. A leverage ratio in a finance note can stay if you undo that hit. The page does not guess. It shows the row.

I will not write "this page humanizes your text." That sentence is a lie. A humanizer that needs a model is a different product, and it would send the draft away. This page is the part that does not need a model.

Nine Boxes, Not a Score

The boxes are em dashes, en dashes, spaced hyphens, smart quotes, the ellipsis character, invisible marks, extra spaces, plain words, and filler phrases. Each one has a count. The count is how many hits that class found in the draft you pasted, not how many you accepted.

The cleaned column updates as you type. There is no Run button. The work is a list of replacements, not a job you send to a queue.

Click Undo on a row and only that hit comes back. The rest stay cleaned. Clear the draft and the rows go away. The boxes you turned off stay off on this machine, in this browser. The text itself is not saved. Close the tab and the paste is gone.

That last part is on purpose. A client letter should not sit in site data overnight.

What Mixpanel Sees

Softery.io loads Mixpanel and Google Analytics on every page. I won't write "zero third-party scripts" over a layout that already ships both. I built the page for a smaller claim. The draft you type never goes out as text.

The events from this tool carry a size bucket and a change count. They do not carry a sentence. They do not carry utilize. They do not carry a name. If you open the network panel and paste a letter, you should see traffic from the layout, and you should not see the letter in those payloads.

I say this every time because the default reaction to a new text tool is distrust. The top comment on a 40-point r/InternetIsBeautiful launch in this vertical assumed the clipboard was being archived and sold. I cannot fix that comment. I can keep the draft in the tab and tell you how to check.

Eighty Thousand Characters

The cap is 80,000 characters. That is a long chapter. Past that the tab starts to hitch, so the paste is cut and the rest is dropped. Split the file if you have more.

I did not pick 80,000 because a competitor uses it. I picked it because a million spans in a list of hits will freeze a laptop, and a chapter is the real job. A novel is a different product.

The sample button drops a short fake draft with a closer, a long dash, a curly quote, and utilize. Press it if you want to see the rows before you paste a real letter.

ConvertCase Gives You the Blob

The ranking file named convertcase.net as the incumbent. One button. One output. Ads. No per-class control. No undo. That is still the default if you search "em dash remover" and click the first result.

The Chrome add-ons redditors built need an install. They only see the page you have open. They do not help you clean a draft you are about to paste into a CMS or an email.

I left those add-ons alone. This address is the paste box. If you live inside Google Docs all day, an add-on might be faster. If you bounce between five apps, a page you can paste into is the one you will actually use.

What This Page Will Not Do

It will not score the text as human or machine. Those scores flip on a comma. They also need a model, or a list of tells so long the page becomes a lecture.

It will not fix a forced list of three ideas. It will not rewrite "it is not X, it is Y" into a better sentence. It will not vary your paragraph length. Those need a reader.

It will not send the draft to an API to get a prettier paragraph back. That would break the promise on this page.

If you want a count against a limit, use the word and character counter. If the paste is JSON, use the JSON formatter. If you want a PDF of the cleaned draft, paste it into Markdown to PDF.

How to Check It

Open the network panel. Paste a sentence with a long dash and utilize. You should see Mixpanel or Google traffic from the layout, and you should not see the sentence in those payloads. Turn the em dash box off. The long dash should come back. Click Undo on utilize. The word should come back. Copy the cleaned column. Paste it somewhere else.

The sample draft is short so you can run this check before you paste a real letter.

Paste the Draft

If you have a letter, paste it.

  1. Open Em Dash Remover.
  2. Paste the draft. Word and Google Docs pastes are fine.
  3. Read the rows. Turn off a class you want to keep.
  4. Undo any single hit that was wrong.
  5. Copy the cleaned column.
  6. Open the network panel once if you don't believe the draft stayed put.

The other tools on Softery follow the same habit. The password generator never sees the password. The JSON formatter never sends the document. This one never sends the draft as text either.
